Randy Rhoads with Ozzy Osbourne

Randy Rhoads, an American guitarist who became famous after becoming the guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. This was in 1979. Randy Rhoads and Ozzy Osbourne along with Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake formed the band that gave Ozzy the place he deserved in Heavy Metal again. As you know, Ozzy had big problems after the departure from Black Sabbath.

Randy Rhoads was originally a classical guitar teacher. Randy and Bob composed some of the best music of Ozzy’s career. Many of these can still be heard on Ozzy Osbourne concerts. You will find good Ozzy Osbourne tabs here.

Mr. Rhoads is also well known for the “Randy Rhoads V” guitar, designed by Randy and built by Charvel in 1981/82. The CEO of Charvel at that time, Grover Jackson, produced Randy’s guitar under the brand name Jackson as he thought that the model was too radical and didn’t want to risk branding it as a Charvel.

This was the guitar that put Jackson fully on the map and it was Jackson’s first model. At the time Charvel was a parts supplier for a few retail musical instrument shops. Tragically Rhoads career ended in 1982, in a plane crash, killing all on board. Because of this, he never saw the final production model of his design, what would come to be known as the “Randy Rhoads V” by Jackson Guitars. Jackson and Charvel shared factory until 1986 and the company was sold to the Japanese manufacturer AMIC in 1989.

Charvel’s was only produced  in Japan until 1991 while Jacksons guitars continued to be made in California. The Charvel name just faded away by the end of the century, Jackson / Charvel would see new light when it was purchased by Fender Music Corporation in 2002.

The Randy Rhoads V guitar

The Randy Rhoads V guitar is today produced by Jackson Guitars, but as Jackson is part of Fender, they are being made in the Fender plant in Corona, Ca. It appears that Mr. Grover is indeed alive and well and giving all his wisdom to the revival of Charvel guitars. In a videoclip he gives credit to Fender for going in the right direction. The Randy Rhoads V guitar from Jackson comes in various schemes, colours and variations of the original. Some of these variants were brought by artists who have released their own variations of the Randy Rhoads V. The left handed version of the Randy Rhoads V is very limited. A few colours and that is it. Jackson’s budget range of guitars made in Asia don’t even allow for one left handed Randy Rhoads V.

Gaskell Guitars located in Sydney Australia make only left handed guitars. They make a Randy Rhoads V model as a full production model. All colours are offered through their custom options at no extra cost. The production model comes in black and the original Randy Rhoads White and Gold scheme. Gaskell Guitars only cater for the left handed guitarist and they are trying to prevent the left hand guitarist from getting the short end of the stick. Check them out. In many cases, what they offer make dreams come true!
